How to look for a new career opportunity without cutting ties with your old job

If you're feeling stuck in your current role and, you've finally decided to leave your job, I will provide 5 ways on how to job search while working full-time.

The initial excitement often turns into anxiety, raising questions like:

“How do I let my network know I’m open to new opportunities without alerting my employer?”

“How can I take time off for interviews while staying present at work?”

Job hunting while employed can be challenging, but I’m happy to share with you 5 advice on securing a new job without jeopardizing your current one.

1.      Know what you want from a new job

It's important to clearly define some parameters for your new role to narrow down your job search. This could include determining the industry you want to work in, the level of position you're aiming for, the salary range you're targeting, or the preferred location for your work.

2.      Keep you Linkedin information up to date

People often headhunt through LinkedIn Recruiter, and your LinkedIn profile acts as your online CV. Keeping it up-to-date is one of the most valuable things you can do to support your job search.

3.      Optimise your CV

Make sure your CV is as concise yet comprehensive as possible, as recruiters and hiring managers typically spend up to 10 seconds reviewing it.

4.      Set up helpful alerts

While you’re working full-time it can be difficult to be constantly searching and staying up to date with the jobs that are available, so I suggest to save yourself the hours of scrolling and spend some time setting up job alerts so they get delivered directly to your email or phone.

5.      Chunk your time

Don't let yourself get overwhelmed by trying to work and job hunt simultaneously. Instead, break the task down into smaller steps, like dedicating time to job searching once a week if necessary. Progress comes from small, consistent actions, which will steadily move you toward where you want to be.

In summary, I can say that job hunting while employed can feel overwhelming, but with a clear plan and strategic actions, it’s entirely manageable. By defining your goals, keeping your LinkedIn profile and CV updated, leveraging job alerts, and managing your time wisely, you can make steady progress toward landing your next role without compromising your current position.

Stay focused, and remember that small, consistent efforts will lead you to your career goals.
